“Alice in Wonderland”

Alice in Wonderland is a marvelous children’s book full of jokes and wordplay and just plain nonsense; but it also wrestles with some serious issues such as growing up and the nature of personal identity. This is the 150th anniversary of the book so we thought that it would be fun to do something a little different for our common reading this year. So we are challenging you, as well as our faculty and staff, to reread Alice and see how many applications or quotes we can make use of in our academic pursuits next year. Here are some of the themes that you might explore as you read through the book.
  1. The language play throughout is very sophisticated.
  2. The constant satirical criticism of society can’t be missed.
  3. The nature of growing up and becoming an adult rather than a child.
  4. Is life a meaningless puzzle?
  5. What is the nature of personal identity?
  6. Are we the same person today as yesterday?
  7. What is the nature of madness and sanity?
  8. How do we cope with loneliness and abandonment?
  9. How threatening is life and how much should we distort our behavior because of death?
  10. How do we deal with meaningless frustrations?
  11. Nature versus nurture conflicts occur continually.
  12. What is justice?
  13. How rigidly should we obey the rules of society?
