On Saturday, May 23, Florida College received the news that Dr. Nancy Barlar had passed away after an extended war with cancer. Through an eight year battle with cancer, Dr. Barlar’s example showed how to live and not just survive in difficult circumstances.
Students and colleagues remember her positive demeanor and tireless effort at the college.
“Nancy may be one of the hardest working people I ever met,” Kathleen Trigg, professor of communication, said. “She was loved and respected by her students and colleagues who saw her as a consummate professional and friend.”
In 1994, Dr. Barlar graduated from Florida College. She was a member of the Florida College Friends during her time as a student and her fellow band members recount her as a talented musician and Christ-focused disciple.
“We traveled many miles together,” Drew Ellis ’94 said. “Her laugh and wit were infectious, and I know there will be many impacted by her loss; however, there is no fear of her eternal destination; her faith and practice of love and goodness were marks of her daily walk.”
Dr. Barlar served as a full-time member of the music faculty at Florida College for the last six years and this year submitted her application for tenure. She played a key role in the development and accreditation of the four-year music education degree. In addition to her role at Florida College, she also served as an adjunct professor for the University of South Florida, Hillsborough Community College and St. Leo University. Dr. Barlar had a special expertise in offering courses online, and she used this knowledge to help Florida College develop a presence in online teaching.
“We all knew her as a valiant fighter with a lovely positive spirit of determination in the face of her physical challenges,” President Payne said. “She was a great example of the godly way to manage the afflictions this life has to offer.”
The Barlar family is planning a memorial service to honor the life of their sister, daughter and friend. “She was an amazing sister and aunt,” Barlar’s brother, David said. “She was an inspiration and exemplified how to put your trust in God and live life to the fullest.”
The family has set up the Dr. Nancy Barlar Music Education Scholarship Fund to honor her. Please visit www.floridacollege.edu/giving/make-a-gift or mail your donation to the development office at Florida College:
