Welcome to our new academic dean, Dr. John Weaver!

Though a new employee, Dr. Weaver is familiar with Florida College in many ways and deeply committed to our mission bringing many valuable skills and experience with him to the role. Grandson of our former president, James R. Cope, he and his wife Vivi (Washburn) are both alums from the mid-nineties and longtime supporters. Since leaving the college, he has been invited to speak at the Florida College Lectures.

Dr. Weaver has served as an administrator in higher education for 15 years. His work includes institutional planning, evaluation of personnel, institutional accreditation as well as the design, implementation and evaluation of college learning activities. He has led academic libraries, hired and developed faculty and instructional support services personnel and served on Academic Standards Committee and Curriculum Review Committees. He has served as head of public services at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, library director at Columbia University in New York as well as dean of library services and educational technology at Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas.

He holds degrees from the University of Arkansas (B.A. in philosophy), University of Chicago (M.A. in religious studies), University of South Carolina (master of library & informational services) and Emory University (Ph.D. in New Testament and early christianity). Weaver served as a deacon and an evangelist for the Embry Hills congregation in Atlanta, Georgia. While in Abilene, he served as a deacon for the Wylie church in Abilene, Texas and most recently, has been the evangelist for the South 14th and Oak Church of Christ in Abilene. He has traveled annually to India with Ed Harrell and other preachers for many years and has been a camp counselor for the last three years at the Florida College New Jersey Camp.

There are still some details to be finalized, but Dr. Weaver will join the administration before the end of the year and will be present for the beginning of the spring semester. We are grateful that Dr. Petty will continue in his role through December as we transition throughout the fall semester.

We are thrilled with the addition of Dr. John Weaver to our institution!
