President Payne Joins #GivingTuesday Movement

President H.E. “Buddy” Payne (A.A. ’65) joined the #GivingTuesday movement with Florida College students as they assembled bags to donate to the families at Ronald McDonald House.

“I was honored to serve alongside Florida College students for #GivingTuesday,” Payne said. “Seeing the volunteer spirit among our students is truly humbling and reminds me why we are participating in this day.”

Florida College students, faculty, staff and administrators participated in a variety of service activities on Tuesday, Nov. 29, as a part of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving back held annually after Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In order to kick off the holiday giving season, they donated blood at a blood drive in the student center and participated in a variety of other activities with campus organizations.

  • Faculty and staff donated toys and other items to All Children’s Hospital.
  • The Rotaract Club visited the VA Hospital and served lunch donated by Mission BBQ to the wounded warriors in the spinal unit.
  • The Florida College Chorus performed a free concert for the residents at John Knox Village.
  • Members of Omega Chi hosted a free car wash on campus for Florida College faculty and staff.
  • Members of Psi Beta Gamma assembled bags to donate to the families at Ronald McDonald House.
  • Both the Sowers Club and YWTO participated in the day’s events with a devotional with the residents at an assisted living facility.
  • Faculty and staff and the Health Science Association joined forces with Chick-fil-A to serve dinner to the guests at Hope Lodge.
  • Members of Zeta Phi Epsilon and Kappa Omicron went trick-or-treating for canned goods in local neighborhoods to donate to Feeding Tampa Bay.
  • The APPLE Club visited Posimoto After School to volunteer with children.
  • Members of Phi Sigma Chi assembled bags of necessary items for the homeless.
  • Residents of Hinely Hall held a clothing drive for Metropolitan Ministries.

In addition to the #GivingTuesday activities happening on campus, Florida College alumni and friends were participating in the day of giving by making gifts online to support student scholarships. Thanks to two anonymous donors, Florida College secured a matching gift of up to $200,000, doubling the impact of all #GivingTuesday gifts. Five additional donors also made super match gifts, matching gifts made within a specific hour a second time.

With a total of 315 gifts made throughout the day and the generous matching gift from two anonymous donors, the college raised more than $350,000 for the Scholarship Partner Fund. This fund provides much-needed scholarships for Florida College students who excel in academics, athletics, fine arts and more, allowing high-achieving students to come to Florida College where they can learn, live and lead His way.

“I am so pleased that the money raised on #GivingTuesday will be going directly to scholarships for the students who did so much to serve others today,” Payne said.
