Beth Behle, Class of 2015

As one of the first Florida College graduates with a bachelor’s degree in English, Beth Behle (B.A. ’15) is serving as an eighth-grade language arts teacher at Foundation Christian Academy in Valrico, Florida.

“Being able to teach at a Christian academy in the subject that I majored in is really cool,” Beth said. “It feels like a family almost in the way that Florida College did.”

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Beth came to Florida College because she saw the experience her older siblings had on campus and thought it would be the right place for her. She started out in the elementary education program but switched to studying in the college’s new English program before her junior year.

“Just at the right time, Florida College added the English program so I was able to stay and complete it,” Beth said. “Being able to study what I enjoy from that Christian perspective is something I couldn’t get anywhere else.”

Being a part of the new program meant Beth got to develop alongside the English curriculum. She took each new class in the program with passionate professors and only a few classmates.

“I saw classes added every year even while I was there, and it was exciting to be a part of that,” Beth said. “It made the students and teachers in the English program feel more like a family.”

Beth loved having the opportunity to build relationships with her professors at Florida College. She was especially impacted by one of her English professors, Karen Witherington, and honored her with her senior coin at the Senior Legacy Ceremony.

“I had her as a teacher before I was even in the English department,” Beth said. “She encouraged me to follow any dream I had.”

Now Beth is encouraging her own students at Foundation Christian Academy. She is also continuing her education by pursuing a master’s degree in creative writing at Lindenwood University and hopes to gain more experience in writing and editing in addition to her teaching work.

Beth is using her bachelor’s degree in English to provide her students with the same kind of Christ-centered education she received at Florida College.
