Florida College Will Host Bill Bennett at Leadership Dinner

Florida College will host guest speaker Bill Bennett at the ninth annual Florida College Leadership Dinner at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2016, at the Hilton Downtown Tampa.

Bennett is one of America’s most respected voices on cultural, political and education issues, and he is the former host of the nationally ranked syndicated radio show, “Morning in America.”

The Florida College Leadership Dinner is an annual event designed to promote ethical leadership and build relationships with members of the Tampa Bay business community while also supporting the business department, according to David Curry, chief advancement officer.

“This event benefits our business department in several ways,” Curry said. “It not only raises money to provide scholarships for our tremendous business students, but also allows those students to learn about ethical leadership and meet local business leaders to cultivate internship possibilities.”

Since the first event in 2008, the funds raised at the Leadership Dinner have benefitted the business programs at Florida College. More than 65 business students have received scholarship money raised at the Leadership Dinner over the past eight years, and this is on track to be the most successful year to date.

But the event also provides an opportunity for the college’s upper-division business students to learn from experienced guest speakers and network with a variety of local business leaders. The Leadership Dinner combines Florida College’s spiritually based values with mainstream leadership principles in order to appeal to professionals from different backgrounds. As a result, the selected guest speakers have experience in a wide range of fields from medicine to sports to journalism.

“We try to focus on a different demographic each year. Ethical leadership is important in any organization whether it be the military, the fast-food industry or the medical field,” Curry said.

This year’s speaker has a diverse background himself. Over the course of his professional life, in education, government and the private sector, Bennett has succeeded in a trifecta of American institutions. He is an award-winning professor and was the Secretary of Education under former President Ronald Reagan. He also served as the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy under former President George H.W. Bush. Bennett is the author of more than 24 books, including “America the Strong: Conservative Ideas to Spark the Next Generation” and two New York Times Best-Sellers.

In his various roles, Bennett is perceived—even by his adversaries—as a man of strong, reasoned convictions who speaks candidly, eloquently and honestly about some of the most important issues of our time.
