The Florida College Oratory Union, coached by Dr. Matt Johnson and Kathleen Trigg, brought home 10 of the 15 year-end awards from the Collegiate Forensic Association. The year-end awards are given based on an accumulation of performance at seven league competitions over the course of the 2015-2016 season.
“This year’s Oratory Union has excelled as a team and as individuals,” Trigg said. “The growth that has occurred intellectually, socially and spiritually is immeasurable.”
Five members of Florida College’s Oratory Union won the ten year-end awards. Katie Thompson and Josh Smelser were the season champions in dramatic duo interpretation. Josh Smelser also won the year-end award for declamation interpretation and the John B. Mingus pan-interpretation award for the top performer in the five oral interpretation of literature awards categories. Jenny West was the season champion in prose interpretation and single dramatic interpretation. Jordan Meirose won the year-end award for informative speaking, and he was the season champion parliamentary debater. Austin Miller won the year-end awards for communication analysis speaking and extemporaneous speaking and was the season champion parliamentary debate speaker.
The Oratory Union students compete against forensic teams from colleges and universities from along the east coast from Washington D.C. to Temple Terrace, Florida.
“Several coaches and competitors from other teams expressed how much they appreciate the spirited competition from Florida College students as well as their welcoming and friendly nature,” Trigg said. “The sense of community within the league is impressive, and many are attributing that camaraderie to our students. The members of the Oratory Union are shining the love of the Lord as they go about speaking, interpreting literature and debating. I feel richly blessed to be their coach.”
Six members of this year’s team will leave on Friday, March 11, to compete at the International Forensic Association tournament in Vienna, Austria, during spring break.
Congratulations to the Florida College Oratory Union on another outstanding competition season.
