James R. Cope Adopt Program

The Adopt Program is about people helping people. Adopt matches deserving students with donors who are interested in helping students attend Florida College. The students selected are informed of their “adoption” and keep the donor informed of their progress during the year. For more information about Adopt Program requirements, click the links below or read the student procedures packet.

First, you must submit your FAFSA before the deadline (see below).  Adopt is a need-based program, meaning that you qualify based on your FAFSA. You will see it listed on your award letter if you qualify. A completed application must also be submitted before the deadline.

Requirements to be considered by the Florida College Adopt Program Include:

  • Completing the FAFSA before the Adopt deadline
  • Applying for a Stafford or King Loan before the Adopt deadline
  • Completing the Adopt application by the deadline
  • Maintaining at least 12 credit hours with a 2.0 GPA every semester
Adopt gifts range in award from $1000 to $5000 per year. Amounts are divided equally between the Fall and Spring semesters. The exact amount a student qualifies for is based on his/her FAFSA.
Yes. Even students who have had Adopt in the past must submit a new application each year. It is the student’s responsibility to be aware of deadlines and submit completed Adopt applications.
There are multiple deadlines, but the earlier you apply, the more money that is available to you.

Adopt Deadlines for 2017-2018

Fall Semester

July 1, 2017 – Students who meet this deadline will receive the full amount of Adopt funding that they qualify for based on the FAFSA.

August 1, 2017 – Students who meet this deadline will receive a 10% reduction of the Adopt funds that they qualify for based on the FAFSA.

August 19, 2017 – Students who meet this deadline will receive a 20% reduction of the Adopt funds that they qualify for based on the FAFSA.

If you miss an Adopt deadline for the Fall semester, your funds will be reduced or you may be unable to receive Adopt funds at all for the Fall if you miss the last Fall semester Adopt deadline.

If you miss the Adopt deadline for the Spring semester, you will not be eligible to receive Adopt funds for Spring.

Adopt applications must be complete and submitted by the deadline. Please read your application carefully and submit all required information. The date that an application is complete is the date that our office considers it submitted.

You must maintain a 2.0 GPA and earn 12 hours every semester in order to keep your Adopt funding. You must send thank you letters to donors who help you.

Working five service hours each semester is also required. In addition to attending the Lectures Adopt Reception, students who are accepted for the Adopt program must sign a pledge stating that their intent to one day reverse roles and become an adoptive parent when they are financially able.

Make sure that you have submitted your FAFSA for the school year that you are planning to attend Florida College. Then, complete the James R. Cope Adopt Program Application.

If you are an international student, you’ll need to fill out the International Student Adopt Program Application. Returning International Students must also complete the International Student Adopt Enrollment Supplement. International applications may be faxed to 813.899.1799 or emailed to mcclisterl@floridacollege.edu, as well as submitted by mail. Please be aware that whatever method of submission you choose, you are still subject to deadlines.

Please also note that late submissions due to technical issues with fax or email will not result in acceptance of late applications. It is the student’s responsibility to make sure his/her completed application arrives before the deadline.

Questions about your Adopt application should be directed to the financial aid office. If you have questions regarding requirements after being accepted as an Adopt student, or donors who want to submit payment, please contact the development office.
