Tim Byers

Tim Byers is practicing servant leadership in Scotland—and he learned it first in Florida.

Byers ’77 attended Florida College because of the godly atmosphere. He grew up in Temple Terrace, so he knew about the environment from personally observing the behavior of administration, faculty, and students over the years.

“The most valuable [things] to me,” Byers said of his time at FC, “were the leadership examples I witnessed and lifelong friendships that were forged.”

The next stop was the University of Florida, where Byers got a degree in chemical engineering. The contrast between schools was obvious. “The competition was a little steeper than at FC,” he said, “and the temptations much more visible. On both counts [I am] very glad that I was not just coming out of high school.”

Byers is now an IT manager for Shell Oil in Aberdeen, Scotland. He would like to start his own technology company someday.

FC prepared Byers for his career “by providing excellent examples of servant leadership.” He said that one of the College’s greatest strengths is that “the administration and faculty are God-fearing leaders, care about the students, and are committed to the ideals of the school.”

The other major strength, he said, is the “young people who are striving to serve Jesus and their peers even as they are making the difficult and turbulent transition to adulthood.”
