Boswell Construction Update

August 3, 2007

Construction crews have been steadily pounding slender concrete beams, called piles, deep into the earth to establish a solid foundation for the new Boswell hall. When finished, more than 200 piles will attach the new residence hall to the rock that lies far below the soil.

The construction crew (below) is steadying the crane-hammer for the next concrete pile. The pile, which can be seen resting on the ground in the left of the photo, will be hoisted into the metal framework and driven into the earth.

Now the pile is being lifted into place:

The pile-driving hammer sends out a puff of hot steam, as well as a loud bang, as it connects with the concrete:

And it does not take long for the powerful hammer to force the earth to swallow the concrete pile:

On campus, the crane is often visible in the distance:

The new Boswell Hall will be large enough to accommodate all male students on campus and will feature suite-style living complete with high-speed internet access and common areas for study and friendship.

The new four-story men’s residence hall will be large enough to host all of Florida College’s male student body under one roof. But the new Boswell Hall is actually only one of two new residence halls to coming to Florida College: a sister building will become host to an additional 92 women. The matching residence halls will offer beatiful suite-style rooms and will include high-speed internet access and common areas for study. Help us build for excellence by contributing your gift to the Campaign for Florida College.
