Intense night of volleyball ends with an FC win
Senior Marissa Paulin and sophomore Amanda Schaefer block a Southeastern hit on October 13.
Monday evening began slowly for the volleyball team as they started their first game against Southeastern University (5-16) down 2-7. Southeastern utilized their two strong blockers to increase the lead to 15-22. The Lady Falcons were able to cut the lead to 20-23 with the help of freshman Jenny Moorer’s serving, but SEU finished with the win, 25-21. The women came back strong in game two with a 7-0 lead. The Fire inched back within four, but FC took a 22-10 lead. Southeastern rallied and responded with five points to one for the Falcons, but freshman Kerri Taylor sealed the 25-17 win with a signature kill. Game three was close for the whole match, with constant lead changes and ties. At 23-23, Southeastern took the advantage. The Falcons responded and Taylor tied the game at 24 and took the team into the lead with two kills. Moorer’s strong serving again finished out the game for FC as her ace serve won the game, 26-24.

The Lady Falcons closed the match in game four by taking the lead from the start and not looking back. The Fire were unable to stop the Falcon serving as senior Marissa Paulin, freshman Maura Ferrell, and Moorer all had ace serves in the middle of the set to keep the lead. Appropriately, an ace serve by junior Josie Ratliff was the final point for FC in the 25-12 win. Freshman Alison Bonner noted one key aspect of their play. “I feel the team is really starting to play together and we’re meshing well as a team,” said Bonner. The USCAA National Tournament is only three weeks away for the Lady Falcons. The volleyball team plays Friday at 6:00 PM in Kissimmee, Fla. against Florida Christian College and Saturday at St. John’s River Community College in a tri-match at 2:00 PM and 4:00 PM. |
