Oratory Union Wins Ocean City Tournament
Florida College’s Oratory Union took the Collegiate Forensics Association (CFA) by storm, leaving their recent Ocean City tournament as the season’s league champions.
The Union (formerly known as Forensics), competes in an array of oratory events, including parliamentary debate, limited preparation speaking, prepared public address and several categories of interpretation events.
Ocean City marked the final tournament for The Union’s season of competition in the CFA. The goal of the league is to equip students for real-world speaking and performance opportunities in their future and to cultivate best practice in analytical and communication skills.
Veteran speaker Andrew Gass (pictured back row, far right) led The Union in his most successful tournament, placing 4th in parliamentary speaking and 2nd in informative speaking. Gass also earned 1st place in extemporaneous speaking, persuasive speaking, and the pentathlon, and earned league champion status in both impromptu speaking and informative speaking.
Melody Baughman (center left) earned 5th place in the pentathlon, 4th in declamation and 2nd in communication analysis. Baughman and Gass teamed up to win 1st in the parliamentary debate team awards.
Freshman Noah Diestelkamp (back row, far left) continued his success with The Union, earning 1st place in the declamation category.
“Our win was close, but comprehensive,” said assistant coach Kathleen Trigg. “Each member of the team contributed to the tournament win and the league championship.”
The Union combined to bring home a total of 23 awards. They now look toward this weekend’s Pi Kappa Delta National Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.
