On Tuesday, February 5, at the conclusion of Florida College’s evening lecture, Dr. H.E. “Buddy” Payne presented Dr. and Mrs. S. Craig Bean with the 2013 Friend to Youth Award.

As students, Craig and Tami were active participants in the Florida College student body. Craig led through the Student Body Government Association, and took on leading roles in drama productions. Tami served as a member of the Young Women’s Training Organization (today known as LOVE). The couple met during the spring of Craig’s freshman year and Tami’s sophomore year.

They married in the summer of 1981 before Craig’s senior year at Colorado State, where he graduated with a degree in Landscape Architecture. In the fall of 1983, they moved to Temple Terrace, where Craig taught Freshman English, German and Drama at Florida College for two years.

They then moved back to Colorado, and after spending seven years there as small business owners, Craig began preaching for the Smoky Hill congregation in Aurora. Since then, Craig has served as a full-time evangelist for three different congregations and traveled to China on missionary work.

While preaching, Craig re-entered academia to complete a Master of Arts degree in New Testament Studies at Johnson Bible College, and later a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies at Trinity Seminary and College of the Bible.

Whether living in Colorado, Washington or Wisconsin, Craig and Tami have continually shown outstanding dedication and service to Florida College.

When the College began its Colorado booster camp in the mid-90s, Craig and Tami were eager to serve under the original directors. When those directors retired, the Beans served as directors and later co-directors until today, a total of 18 years of service.

In 2004 Craig combined his passion for Florida College with his experience in landscape architecture to establish Labor Camp. Every summer, volunteers come from many parts of the country to devote their strength, sweat and time in manual labor for the benefit Florida College. Over the past nine years, this annual effort contributed over $210,000 in man-hours for their alma mater.

Craig and Tami currently live in Racine, Wisconsin, where Craig has preached for the Spring Street congregation for the past 10 years. They have three children—Lauren, Kailey and Kyle—that are Florida College alumni, and three grandchildren, Bella, Juliet and Bayne. Their fourth child, Will, is currently a junior at the College.

Florida College is deeply indebted to Craig and Tami Bean for their continual service and commitment to their alma mater, and is proud to present them with the 2013 Friend to Youth Award.
