Falcons Dismantle DeVry in Home Opener
The Florida College men’s basketball season is off to a promising start as the Falcons rode the momentum of their 2-0 start to a 96-61 victory at home over the DeVry University Sky Hawks.
The game seemed to be secured early as Justin Mitchell netted the game’s first eight points in less than four minutes, setting the tempo for the rest of the game and prompting an early timeout from the Sky Hawks. Jordan Mitchell followed suit (11 Pts) and freshman starter Kimball Hubbard enjoyed a respectable all-around performance in his Conn Gymnasium debut (8 Pts, 7 Reb, 4 Stl).
With a 35-point lead at halftime, the starters’ contributions decelerated during the second half, as Coach Robb Mitchell gave the second unit a workout.
Freshmen Davian Jones (15 Pts) and Pedro Pabon (10 Pts, 3 Ast) led a second unit in which every active player scored, a surprising statistic Coach Mitchell attributes to his Falcon’s athleticism and smothering defense, which produced 19 steals and even more turnovers.
D. Jones 15 Pts, 4 Reb, 2 Stl
J. Mitchell 11 Pts, 5 Reb, 2 Blk
A. Hays 12 Pts, 3 Reb
