Speech and Debate Continues Under “Oratory Union”

October 5, 2012

The 2012-2013 speech and debate program at Florida College begins with a full roster of competitive speakers, a finalized competition schedule and a change in title. This year the organization transitions from the name “forensics” to the Florida College Oratory Union, a traditional speech and debate term that more accurately encompasses the group’s many components. The Union competes in various categories of speech, from prepared platform speeches to limited preparation speaking to oral interpretation events.

On Friday, September 28 The Union participated in their first competition in which they triumphed in the Child of the Sun Tournament at Florida Southern College. Debate Captain Greg Kline led the way, capturing first place in impromptu speaking and achieving a perfect score from every finals judge.

Fresh off a successful first competition and under the direction of Dr. Matt Johnson, the Union anticipates a spirited season of competitive speaking. This year the organization also looks to bringing public debates and reading events on campus, demonstrating and promoting the competitive and artistic aspects of speech.
